The Panamanian Registry has to take all the necessary measures to guarantee the safety of the ships that carry its flag, as dictated by the United Nations Convention on Maritime Law (UNCLOS) in its article 94.
Each vessel sailing under the Panamanian flag in foreign service and dedicated to international commerce and other commercial activities shall be subject to an annual safety inspection, in order to determine whether it complies with the National and International Laws and Regulations currently in force. In addition, vessels shall be subject to special inspections depending on the circumstances.
Inspections and the issuance of appropriate certificates on behalf of the Panamanian administration in accordance with international conventions have been permitted by leading classification societies and international organizations.
The Annual Safety Inspection (ASI) also includes an inspection of the working and living conditions of the crew, in accordance with the International Labor Organization Convention 2006.
The inspections are performed by naval inspectors working by the Panama Maritime Authority as well as naval inspectors working outside the national territory. In order to request an inspection of the vessel, please write a request indicating: name of the vessel, IMO number, information on the vessel’s position.
